I started another site recently, AFTER fighting the ever-growing theory of CSS is better than Tables. I actually started this site in CSS and XHTML but after hours of the trial and error process, I decided that for THIS site, tables would be better. The reasons I decided this are: 1. My client, Don Edwards, was in a bit of a hurry and I can throw a Table-type site together in record time; and 2. with the type of e-commerce site that he wanted, it would have LOOKED the same either way. I think it works well. And it doesn’t look bad at all! Was it tough to do? I bet from now on you’ll encourage all your clients to use the css layouts instead of tables. As you wrote, much more flexible, and it does give you definate advantages over table layouts.
Tough to do? No, like I said I decided to go ahead and go for tables in this case, so the layout went up pretty quick because I knew exactly what I was doing. It was adding all those products that took me a while. As for encouraging clients to go for teh CSS layouts, yes I will, and I actually sent Don several samples of CSS sites before we started, but he decided to go for the tried and true layout of one of his previous projects, MedRep Express. But for new clients from now on, I’ll push the CSS layouts. I still have some learning to do in that area but I know the more I do the more I’ll know…. if you know what I mean.
