ALBANY, N.Y. — The state Senate will act this week on legislation to prohibit anyone from creating or maintaining a Web site or hunting gallery in New York for remote control hunting via the Internet, according to two key senators.

Responding to a Texas Web site that planned to let users fire at real game with the click of a mouse, the New York lawmakers said Monday that several other state legislatures are considering similar bans.

This is what gets me:

In Internet-assisted hunting, promoted as a service for the handicapped, a remote user can fire a mounted rifle at live game. The first known hunt of this sort took place in April on a ranch outside of San Antonio, Texas. No animals were shot that day.

Promoted as a service for the handicapped? Sounds like a crock to me.

I’ve changed themes again, yes, but not because I wanted to! I loved the last theme. It’s just that when I finally got around to looking at it in IE, I was very embarrassed to see that the theme I was using didn’t even show up at all. Just a bunch of black and white ugliness. I’m not entirely crazy about this theme but maybe it will grow on me. I should just create my own theme. 10. All Black Background
To me this just screams TEENAGER. Black is fine if you break it up with another color. But an all black background with mostly just text I don’t like.

9. Background Music
For the most part I don’t like to go to a site and have music forced on me. I especially despise background music in the form of a MIDI. If you’re going to force your taste of music on me then at the very least learn how to turn an mp3 into a wav and how to reduce the file size of the wav so I can hear REAL music… on second thought, just leave the music out. Just because you might like rap or KORN or twangy country music doesn’t mean your visitors will, and who are you trying to please? This particular site also falls into the black background category above.

8. Frames
I hate frames. To tell you everything I hate about frames it would need it’s own top 10 list. You can get the same layout using tables, which would be in Rich’s top ten list. Ok, you can get any layout you want using xhtml and css. Stop with the frames, people, and welcome to the 21st century.

7. Dead Links
Web Designers, please keep an eye on your links and make sure they don’t lead to neverland! Just check them once a month, even. If the site you’re linking to leads to a dead site please remove it!

6. Click Here to Enter Site
Starting pages that simply say the above. Why add an extra page? Why not just let the starting page be the actual first page? Why do I have to click anywhere to “enter site?” Please don’t misunderstand me, I’m not referring to flash sites that have a starting page that allows the flash content to load before entering. That’s next.

5. Please Wait while Page Loads…
and loads, and loads and loads. I didn’t include an example because you know exactly what I mean. If you’re going to use flash, which I love usually, please don’t let it be flash that takes forever to load. I don’t mind waiting 20 seconds or so, but please, not a minute or two. I’m very impatient.

4. Slow Loading Images
It’s very easy to reduce a file size using either Adobe Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro or a multitude of other image editing programs. Please use something!

3. Huge Text
I’m not blind! How about a nice 14 or 12 point instead? That’s plenty big enough! The site I’ve used for this example also falls into the FRAMES category, so you’ll have to click on “SERVICES” to see what I mean.

2. Pop Ups (No Example, don’t want to force that on ya)
Enough with the pop-ups already. Designers, do you really make money from affiliate pop-ups or does everyone (like me) despise them and instantly exit them before they can even see what they are? Stop already!

1. Buttonized Images
Images that aren’t really buttons, because they don’t lead to anywhere else… just a buttonized effect placed on a general image. Leave the buttonizing for buttons. Buttons are clickable and lead you somewhere else. I also don’t like HUGE buttons. The example page for this one has both huge actual buttons and buttonized images just for the hell of it.

As I posted earlier, I recently took a little trip to Gibson, Tennessee to attend a 50th Anniversary party, but even more to see my lifelong friend Monica, one of the 7 daughters of the happy couple we were honoring. The photo here is one that I received in the mail yesterday from Monica. It shows me (left) and her (right) as kids in Tennessee. My family used to go spend every Easter with her family, this is probably one of those times. I love this picture, it makes me laugh. We both looked so goofy. I’m EXCITED!!!!!!!! Monica is coming to Little Rock this weekend because after more than 10 years of not seeing each other, we didn’t get to spend enough time catching up when I was there a couple of weeks ago. YAAAAYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rich and I were talking (well mostly I was talking) about my daughter Sara earlier, known in this blog as “I Know Things” and in the post below this one, so I thought I would post a few more pics of her for the heck of it, although she won’t like it!

Yes, it’s MayDay. A peaceful, pure, festive day for your innocent sons and daughters to dance around the Maypole. Just good clean fun, right? WELL, why do we celebrate MayDay? It’s supposed to be celebrating the 8 hour work day as opposed to the 12, 14 or 16 hour work days that ended in 1886. So why are little kids dancing around a decorated pole? Pole, 8 hour workday. Pole, 8 hour work day. Something isn’t matching up here, wouldn’t you agree? Truth be told, the Maypole (outlawed in the 1600s along with MayDay itself) was actually made to be a phallic symbol. Single men and women would hold on to the ribbons tied to the pole and dance around hopefully becoming entwined with their true love. So yes, next time you consider celebrating MayDay with it’s old traditions, keep in mind your darling little kids dancing around a phallic pole. I’m sure that one will put a damper on your next MayDay
