Last night on CNN presents, I watched a special about a girl named Sue Rubin who has autism. As a teenager, she was tested as having the intelligence of a 5 year old. After her parents taught her to communicate using a small keyboard device, she was retested and was found to have the intelligence of a 28 year old. Apparently she has little control over her hand movements, facial expressions, and the sounds that come out of her mouth, all very similar to a toddler, but her thoughts are perfectly normal, even above average. She fights daily, all day, to not kick, scream, bite, etc., and refers to this struggle as “killing autism.” Sue is now a senior in college, and is changing the way the medical world sees autism.
