In a comment over at HollyShow, liberalcowboy from JackofAllBlogs said “I am still afraid of Blockbuster, they are meaner than the INS.” He says my comment to that was a good story and that I should post it, so here it is:
A few years ago I was inside a Blockbuster store with my daughter, and my husband was waiting in the car. We got into a VERY long line, and something freaky happened. The power to one of the cash registers shut down, just quit working, WHILE the drawer was open. Being some kind of new fangled electronic register, the drawer wouldn’t shut. The manager ran over and locked the doors, locked everyone inside IN. Wouldn’t let anyone leave (or so they said) until they got the power back and could shut the drawer (like they couldn’t just take the money to the back and continue with the other registers). So my husband saw them lock the doors and ran up to the door to see what was up, I went to the door and yelled through the glass that a register went down. He knocked on the door to get the managers attention, and said LET MY WIFE AND KID OUT! She turned her back to ignore him, and oh boy she should NOT have done that. He just started kicking the hell out of that door until they went over to it and opened it and let JUST ME and my daughter out. He stood out there screaming HOW DARE YOU TRY TO HOLD MY FAMILY HOSTAGE IN A GD VIDEO STORE YOU UN-AMERICAN PIECE OF SHIT!!!!! We left, with the others locked in. Why didn’t they throw a fit too? I would have if my husband hadn’t.
So I’m wondering, would YOU be pissed off if you were locked inside a crowded video store, not allowed to leave, while your daughter was tired and your spouse was outside waiting on you? Would you wait patiently like everyone else there was willing to do?

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! I’d get out allright. Probably be escorted by a couple of police officers too.
I would have been right behind you. LOL
Lemme’ guess, some young 16 year old manager locked the door. Pfffft! Funny
OMG! Kudos to your husband! That’s hilarious!
LOL Mac, no it was a lady about my age.
Kristene, yeah once in awhile he IS worth something, lmao.
and Diane… I KNOW! lol
I hate Blockbuster. I’ve boycotted it for over 5 years now. They sent me to collections on a bogus late charge and threatened to ruin my credit over a stupid $10.xx bill that I didn’t even owe.
Blockbuster and Wal-Mart, I’ve boycotted both for years.
And yeah, I would have thrown a hissy fit. How stupid to lock people in a store. Take the money to the back of the store. It shows lack of tranining and how people panic over something that could easily be solved with some common sense.
Boycotting Wal-Mart. HMMM I would like to but don’t think I could! We have no Target stores here anymore, no K-Mart, no other discount department stores. I really can’t (or won’t) pay the high prices at places like Sears and JC Penny. There just are no small shops anymore (I know, because of Wal-Mart). Where would I get…. everything? I even buy my groceries at Wal-Mart because around here, that’s where they’re cheapest.
They would have let me out, or I would have had to hurt someone.
I know you woulda, DL, lol
If I were in the store, I’d ask the manager politely to open the door. If (s)he didn’t, I’d call the police and say I’m being kidnapped/false imprisonment.
Hell no! I’d call the cops on my cell and file a complaint; INSIST on investigation and prosecution, keep pushing it as hard and long as necessary. Hell, make a federal case of it. Sue the bastards, too.
“false imprisonment, n. Detention or imprisonment of a person contrary to the provisions of law.”
Yeh, make the bastards PAY.
Yeh, more. Can’t let something this rich pass:
“false imprisonment, complete restraint upon a person’s liberty of movement without legal justification. Actual physical contact is not necessary; a show of authority or a threat of force is sufficient. The person falsely imprisoned may sue the offender for damages. The suit would be brought against officials improperly issuing warrants for arrest and against private persons for any illegal total restraint of liberty.”
Had there been just ONE person there who used heir cell phone, there coulda been store full of rich folks come outa that lil episode…
And rightly so.
Bastards.
Gosh, why don’t I ever think of these things when they happen?
What the hell? You go back to Blockbuster’s without Mike or a cell phone and get locked in? LMAO
No! lol Diane. Well let’s see, yesterday was thanksgiving, I mostly just cooked, ate, visited, slept. Today I got up early and went with my sister to visit my dad, who, as you know, doesn’t live near me. I’m so tired. I’ll post more tomorrow.
Definitely need to say job well done to your hubby. My fiancee would have reacted the same way. That’s absolutely ridiculous what they did and yes they should have simply taken money to back of store and locked in managers office. I just don’t go to blockbusters anymore. Movies are always out and much to expensive and annoying to go in the first place. By the way hi everyone new here.
Hi Marsha! Where do you get your movie rentals? Thanks for the comment… I’ve added your link.
Hi ty mel. At this point I just use netflix. Get whatever I want and return them whenever I want. I mean I have up to a year. Even I can actually remember to return them in that time frame. lol. I saw that blockbuster is doing the same thing too. But it was funny that they had all these small print stuff that still said you gotta pay late fees. Even though they had millions of commercials and flyers saying no more fees.
Too true Marsha! Check out my comments about Blockbuster on my movie reviews blog.
