I had my coupon blog hosted at Cpanel Solutions. I’ve had some problems with them in the past, but this last one takes the cake. A couple of days ago I was working on the site, adding some content, changing some things, and all was well that morning. Then that afternoon I tried to go back to it and I thought it was down because I couldn’t connect to it, couldn’t login to the cpanel, and couldn’t receive the email for that site. I waited thinking it would come back up. When it didnt show back up by the next morning, I sent in a ticket reporting the problem. This is some of the correspondence:

Message (below):My site is down, my email won’t work, I also can’t get to the cpanel to try repairing the database. What’s going on? It’s been down since yesterday.

(Message 1) It has never been down since yesterday.

It’s working. Please contact your ISP(Message 2, came one minute later): For example I can see
Get The Vintage Ruby Ring for only $32 with coupon code AFRUBY32. Expires 04/13/2006(Message 3 came another one minute or less later, i haven’t even had time to reply to the first): Do not jump into any conclusion too quickly. Please try it on another computer with a different ISP to test it.
OK, so I thought, well that’s strange, they can see it and I can’t. I then asked both Rich and Diane to go look, and they could both see it. Only I couldn’t. I also called my ISP… they too could see it and said the problem wasn’t on their end. So I added a message to the ticket thread:

Great! I am glad you can trust us now.The other 2 possiblities
1. A company firewall
2. A firewall triggered by a virus on your PC. A proxy setup to block your favourite domains.
Glad I can trust them now? What the hell is that supposed to mean? What makes them think I didn’t? Although I must admit that by this point, I was beginning to wonder about them.

1. I’ve always trusted you.2. I’m on my home computer, I was working on the site from this computer yesterday morning, suddenly yesterday afternoon neither the site nor the cpanel would come up for me, and also can’t receive any percentsavings.com email.
3. I turned off the only firewall i’m running and still can’t access it. I just ran both Norton and AVG anti virus, even though they run automatically every morning, and still can’t access it. I also ran xoftspy, still no go.
I really am at a loss here. I can access any other site except this one, the one hosted by you.
SO at this time, it had been more than 24 hours that I couldn’t view my own site, or log in to the cpanel for it, or receive any email for it. I had been around in circles trying all these retarded things they suggested. Maybe it was a ridiculous conspiracy theory, but I was really starting to think that THEY had blocked my IP from seeing my own site. It seemed to me that every time I added to the ticket, their reply came IMMEDIATELY, and there was no way they had time to really check anything.
On that last message, I waited quite a long time for them to reply back to me, and they never did, So I sent this:

Sorry, the message was not related to server operations.I think you need to have your computer check or borrow a computer until it resolved.
I quickly moved my site to where all my other sites are hosted, and what do you know? I can see everything, although I still had to move the database, etc… thanks to rich for logging into my account and getting it for me. Funny isn’t it? A “virus” was keeping me from seeing it when it was hosted by one place, but not by another? YEAH RIGHT.
So here are the last messages, one from me, and their reply:

I’ve moved my site to another hosting company, and lo and behold, I can see it perfectly now, and my email works too. Too bad you guys didn’t put a little effort into this. If you had at least tried, I wouldn’t be talking about the “help” your company gave me on all my blogs.I want my account cancelled immediately.

In my opinion, you should NOT USE THIS HOSTING COMPANY.
Speaking of crappy hosting companies, I also wouldn’t recommend the one that I’m using for all my sites, 1and1.com. Although I’ve never had a site go down in 2 years with them, and they have a lot of great options, both Rich and I have been trying to reach them for 2 or 3 days. Rich just wants a simple question answered and has sent them two emails with no reply. I just had a question about my billing, and they never replied to my email either. I called them too, and was left on hold for 25 minutes. Bad service! I also had a hell of a time moving my coupon blog database over.
I also need to move a site for one of my clients, and I’m looking around. I called bluehost to ask a question about shopping carts, and I was talking to a human in less than a minute. Hmmmm, might go with them.

So did you get your questions answered by Bluehost?
[…] You would think that having a large hosting company would mean your technical support would be on the spot, right? Well it seems that both Mel and I believe that. To our chagrin… […]
Yes, and MAN do they answer the phone fast. They were very very helpful too, very knowledgeable.
That whole conversation was very unprofessional on their part 100% I would send that to the top level and let them know how their employees work. No ’sorry for your troubles’ at the cancellation either.
Damn!
That’s the thing mac, I think I WAS dealing with the top level. I think it’s a very small business.
They were being awfully blasé about if they were indeed the top level. Maybe they’re just a front for something and are one of those business where they want to lose money on purpose. Not that I know anything about that :/
Good luck in finding a new host, Mel!
We’re hosting liftport dot com at Dreamhost, have been for a few years. Steller service, outstanding support, minimal downtime. And they keep giving us disk space and bandwidth without raising the basic rate.
That said we are moving to a hosted colo server with another provider. Nothing against dreamhost, we’re ready to our own box and we’re getting a very good deal on it.
Thanks, Skye!
Brian, thanks for that info, I’ll look into dreamhost. What I really need to find is a host that offers an ecommerce program that is easily integrated into existing html. I don’t want any PHP shopping carts! If anyone knows what I’m talking about and can point me in the right direction, please do!
Why not try my provider, it’s Danish company giving you all freedom there is and it’s costing nothing ±20 $ (small account 500 MB) per year. You can have as much as you wish sub-domains and POP accounts and there is no limitation on the traffic either, PHP and ASP is supported too
And do not worry it’s not some obscure company which might disappear in few days, it’s big one here in Europe. The help desk is 24/7 via chat-box, btw very helpful.
www.b-one.net
LOL Ask Danes they know what freedom means.
What’s wrong with php shopping carts?
php shopping carts are fine if you know enough about php to make your site design exactly as you want it… I dont. For instance, this site is php, but I used a template and simply changed the images and colors. But look at this site, look at the shopping section of it: This is my own html and the owner does NOT want one iota of the design changed. We just need to move to a new host because the shopping cart is extremely old and the host company is no longer going to be using it… I also can’t find another hosting company that offers this cart. So what I need, mac, is a host that has a shopping cart that I can install and then simply change the html for the “add to cart” buttons. If I move this site to a host that has only php carts, then I’m screwed.
Boris, see above, lol.
Mel, see what?! I’m reading like obsessed this page and I cant find anything.
Boris, I meant even if I used your hosting company, do they provide shopping cart software I can put into my own html? And also boris, what about paying in US dollars? How much is that? lol.
Mel, go to their website, check the “SUPPORT” page there is all you need to know.
Paying should not be trouble ’cause Denmark is not using Euro but Danish Krone and they accepted my Euro payment with no problem.
500 MB cost you $ 1,50 p/m precisely.
But you have to pay all year in advance
so that will be $18,00 + inscribing fee $ 14,60 (only one time)
OK here follows chat I have asked them about US
Please wait for a site operator to respond.
You are now chatting with ‘Kaye’
Kaye: Thank you for using B-one Interactive Online Support. My name is Kaye. How may I assist you?
you: Hi Kaye, Can US citizen use B-one service, I mean host website by B-one?
Kaye: Yes no problem, you can register a domain name to us.
you: OK thats good news. Are regular US Credit Cards like Visa etc accepted.
Kaye: Yes we do accept visa
you: Super, Thank you, that was all. Nice day
Kaye: You are welcome. Good Bye and have a nice time
Thanks for looking into that for me, Boris! Unfortunately, they don’t have the shopping cart set-up that I need for my client, but I may use them for some of my personal sites… that is such a low price!!!!
I’m not one to comment on webhosting. They all piss me off sooner or later…
Melody Ralls
Reading your story line, I think you owe the hosting company an apology, especially when you are making up a lot of assumptions.
Qhost is a trojan that prevents access to certain web sites, it changes unsuspecting user dns, and you don’t see your website and yet everyone see your website! So when you change host, you are assigned a different ip, you then see your website again!
It uses an exploit in IE to upload the trojan to the user’s machine and execute it.
In any case, I think your ridiculous conspiracy theory, actually makes me wonder if you are just a little off… I would correct the “DO NOT USE THIS HOST” … for such little things.
They should have offered me a little more guidance. You saw the shitty attitude they gave me, so they get it back from me.
Or should I say “YOU”
It uses an exploit in IE- since when do you use IE? lol
Actually, I don’t see any “shitty attitude” other then it coming from you Mel!
Well I don’t even have that crappy IE installed on my computer.
Now paul and jean, shouldn’t you two be getting back to work “Helping” your customers over at Cpanel? Paul and Jean. So which one of you is “Team Lead” ?? and shouldn’t that be Team LeadER? I suspect it’s you Paul, since both in the ticket messages and in your post here, you use the word “it” where you should use “it is.”
