Can’t get any answer from Shaw CableSystem (which is the cable company through which I get my Internet service) about that frigging Spews thing. I still can’t even comment on my own blog — Samantha Burns has same problem and can’t comment on my blog either.

About the VoIP telephone service, the biggest caution is that Vonage, while reputable, may not be around once the dust settles about VoIP services.

Most of the regular telephone suppliers like Telus, Bell Canada etc. will be offering the VoIP services in the next few years. As well, some critics say the Vonage system is not as “secure” as telephone lines and like any internet transmission, could be intercepted be hackers.

I switched two months ago to the VoIP services of my cable company (Shaw) — now I get my basic cable TV, digital TV stations, cable internet, and phone services — the entire bundle costs me about $100 CDN per month. They market it as a “closed” system as compared to the Vonage VoIP and say it is more secure than Vonage.

The biggest reason for switching was simply cost. The cable bundle (including phone) saves me about 1/3 of what my phone used to cost. But I get unlimited 24/7 long distance in North America, 1,000 overseas long distance, same phone number as before, all the enchanced phone features like voice mail, call display etc.

So far no problems other than the service has been down twice for about 3 hours for upgrade servicing.

I do have this big black box (about the size of a shoe box) in my hall coat closet with a bunch of lights that flash off and on which hooks into where the cable comes into my house. Other than that, all my old phones work, I use all the old phone outlets already installed in my house.

Oh yeah, one other thing — I had a monitored alarm system but the alarm company wanted another $35 per month because I switched to the VoIP phone. The alarm company says the VoIP isn’t reliable enough and so the $35 was for a “cellular” backup monitoring phone. Instead of paying the extra, I had them remove the alarm system.
