Thinking of opening an online store, or building one for a client? Top 3 Dont’s:
3. osCommerce Shopping Cart
Sure, once you get it set up, the admin features are great, and the database setup is good, but the design options suck! Making changes or additions to it is HARD! Just ask Rich, I had to get his help to “simply” add two fields on the order form on a couple of oscommerce shops, and even he was pulling his hair out…. for several days!!!!
2. Hassan Shopping Cart
You may sign up with a hosting company that offers the Hassan Shopping Cart. Don’t Do It! Don’t! Ever! Do It!!! You will never stop regretting it!!!!!!
1. FatCow Hosting
One site that used to offer the above shopping cart but now doesn’t is FatCow. I can see why they stopped offering Hassan, but now the one e-commerce option they do offer only allows you 15 items, and anything more will cost you megabucks. Plus, Fatcow is ALWAYS screwing something up. Just ask Diane! So NO FATCOW!
Other sucky cart options are Agora and Zencart. I haven’t actually used these two, but I’ve tried them and then immediately replaced them with something else. If you want a real online store, consider Miva, and a hosting company that offers it. On the other hand, if you just want to place an item or two (or a service) for sale on your already existing site, consider Paypal. Ummm. I’ve used osCommerce and liked it. I’ve added extra fields to it. Even Engraving text for jewelery.
But your right about it being a bit difficult to hack, there is a lot of code to frig around with.
I’ll be honest though, when I was finished hacking it, I didn’t want to touch anything else outta’ fear of screwing it up royaly.
I’ve heard Miva was pretty good also.
Another tip you might want to add is a shopping cart that handles GD for thumbnail images.
Do keep me posted with any other ones you find that are any good though, I’m going to opening up another online shop sometime soon. Preferrable Free and PHP with GD support.
Yes- I do not like FatCow. David doesn’t seem to have a lot of trouble with it though, but I’m not sure of that.
Oh no, the nightmare re-emerges. I’ve tried so hard with therapy to get over that …
LOL. I remember you saying, ‘oh come on Rich, it’ll be easy, just a few hours’.
LOL sorry rich!
Got to read my last posting, it’s hilarious!
